Planning a multi-day South Indian Telegu & Tamil wedding in Philadelphia
For Swetha, a surgeon, and Shashi, a software engineer based in Pittsburgh, the wedding was a homecoming to Philadelphia. It was a multi-day South Indian celebration along the waterfront at Hilton Penn's Landing, rooted in traditional rituals in a Philadelphia setting.
The planner’s perspective
A wedding for a surgeon and an engineer often involves high-achieving families who value efficiency. The Baraat alone required months of coordination between permits, marina access, a rain contingency, and precise timing of the boat arrival synced with the wedding Murthum. The nature of this multi-day celebration spread across two very different environments: a backyard where anything can breathe, and a city hotel where every minute runs on a schedule.

A Skyline Vision
They chose the Hilton Penn’s Landing specifically for its architecture. The floor-to-ceiling windows look out over the Delaware River, the marina, the passing boats. It's an unmistakably Philadelphia view, and it became the backdrop for everything that followed.
A Backyard Haldi and Water Gun Finale
The festivities began at Shashi's family home for the Mehndi, Haldi and Pelli Kuturu ceremony. After the rituals wrapped up, the formalities gave way to laughter as friends and family joined in an impromptu water gun (fight) party. It was one of those unplanned moments that ends up being everyone's favorite memory.
The Quiet Prelude
The next morning started early with a first look against the downtown Philadelphia skyline, Swetha in a traditional saree, Shashi in a classic dhoti, the city quiet behind them.
A Nautical Baraat Across the Delaware
Then came the Baraat. Instead of arriving on horseback, Shashi and his groomsmen crossed the Delaware River by boat, docked near the venue, and made their way to the ceremony from the water.
The Grand Mandap
Inside the ballroom, the ceremony design matched the scale of the occasion. A glossy raised runway led toward an open Mandap framed in soft pink, peach, and ivory florals. Overhead, cascading blooms formed a canopy above the stage while low garden arrangements lined the runway below. It was grand without being heavy, traditional without being rigid, which was exactly what Swetha and Shashi had asked for from the very beginning.
The Final Celebration
The weekend that started on a family lawn ended in the grand ballroom, and somewhere in between, a boat crossed the Delaware. That's the short version. The ballroom was the perfect place to let it all land.
